Researchers at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, have developed APO, a mixed reality stroke rehabilitation application incorporating the traditional Māori health model Te Whare Tapa Whā. This model encompasses four dimensions: physical health (taha tinana), spiritual health (taha wairua), family health (taha whānau), and mental health (taha hinengaro). APO was developed through co-creation sessions with seven stroke survivors and uses a smartphone with tangible wooden blocks featuring digital photo overlays in a puzzle game format. Results showed that creative physical activities encourage regular use of paretic limbs, social interactions through shared media support meaningful connections with family and community, and spacing activities throughout the week helps balance feelings of exertion.
